Kitui County Assembly Speaker Kevin Kinengo on Wednesday inspected the ongoing tarmacking of the 13-kilometre Kamuwongo–Kandwia road, a flagship infrastructure project launched in November last year by President William Samoei Ruto. The visit underscored the county leadership’s commitment to monitoring the progress of critical development projects aimed at improving connectivity across the region.
The road upgrade is expected to significantly boost mobility and economic activity, as it forms a vital link within the broader Mwingi–Kamuwongo–Ciangera corridor. Once complete, the route will connect to major transport networks including the Thika–Garissa road at Mwingi town, as well as the Ena–Chiakariga–Usueni–Tseikuru–Kyuso and Kibwezi–Kitui–Kabati–Mbondoni roads, enhancing regional integration.
Traversing high-potential agricultural zones, the improved road will facilitate faster and more efficient transportation of fresh produce to key markets such as Mombasa. This is expected to reduce post-harvest losses and increase farmers’ incomes. Leaders and residents have expressed optimism that the project will be completed on schedule, opening up the area and strengthening links with neighbouring counties including Embu and Tharaka Nithi.
