Tensions flared in Mwingi Town after an opposition rally led by Kalonzo Musyoka descended into disorder, with Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi at the center of the controversy. The event, which brought together key opposition figures including Rigathi Gachagua, Eugene Wamalwa, and Justin Muturi, had started as a peaceful engagement with residents before turning chaotic.
The rally attracted a large crowd, with strong mobilization from Mwingi Central MP CPA john Makau . Chants from sections of the crowd in support of an opposing candidate reportedly agitated Mulyungi, who reacted angrily, leading to a breakdown in order during the gathering.
The situation escalated when Mulyungi allegedly made inflammatory remarks and appeared to lose control of his supporters. tensions peaked when individuals believed to be aligned with him attempted to disrupt the event, prompting immediate intervention from security and Kalonzo Musyoka himself who called the Mp out.
Kalonzo Musyoka was forced to step in and publicly reprimand the Mwingi central Mp Gideon Mulyungi , warning against any acts of violence. In a stern response, Kalonzo cautioned that disciplinary action could be taken if such incidents persisted, especially following reports of hostility directed at Julius Makau Malombe, the Kitui Governor, who was in attendance.
Wiper Party leader strongly condemned what it termed as “goonism” and emphasized the need for civility in political engagements. The party reiterated that democratic space must be guided by respect, dialogue, and the will of the people rather than intimidation or chaos.
Residents who attended the rally expressed mixed reactions, with many commending Kalonzo for taking a firm stance in restoring order. Some locals noted that such incidents risk undermining unity within the region, particularly at a time when opposition leaders are seeking to consolidate support ahead of future elections.
The incident has also exposed underlying tensions within the Wiper Party, raising questions about internal discipline and cohesion. Political observers suggest that how the party handles such confrontations could significantly shape its image and influence in Ukambani as the political landscape continues to evolve.
