The Kitui County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Dr. Mbaya Kimwele, has urged farmers across Kitui County to take full advantage of the ongoing rains by planting crops that require minimal rainfall.
Dr. Kimwele advised farmers to prioritize drought-tolerant and early-maturing crops such as green grams (ndengu), cowpeas, fast-maturing maize varieties, and millet to maximize yields during the current rainy window.
He further encouraged livestock farmers to participate in the ongoing countywide animal vaccination exercise aimed at protecting herds from preventable diseases. The CECM emphasized that the vaccination program is part of broader efforts to boost livestock productivity and safeguard farmers’ livelihoods.
Dr. Kimwele also called on farmers to work closely with agricultural extension officers deployed across the county for professional guidance on crop management, pest control, and modern farming techniques.
The CECM revealed that the County Government of Kitui County, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, in partnership with the national government, is undertaking the construction of a Livestock Training Institute within the county. The institution is expected to enhance skills development in animal husbandry and related fields.
He urged students across the county to consider pursuing courses in veterinary medicine and other livestock-related disciplines, noting that veterinary professionals remain few in number in Kitui.
On weather preparedness, Dr. Kimwele cited a forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department indicating that moderate to heavy rainfall (above 20mm within 24 hours) is expected in Kitui County from February 25 (4:00 PM) to March 3, 2026 (9:00 PM).
He warned residents to remain vigilant for possible flash floods, flooded roads, poor visibility, and lightning strikes. Flooding may also occur in low-lying and downstream areas, even where rainfall is not heavy.
“The public is advised to avoid walking or driving through moving water, crossing flooded roads or rivers, and sheltering under trees during storms. Stay informed through official weather updates and take necessary precautions,” said Dr. Mbaya Kimwele.
The county government reiterated its commitment to strengthening food security and livestock development as key pillars of economic growth in Kitui.
