Mwingi Region Produces Winners in Kitui Governor’s Cup Tournament

The inaugural Kitui Governor’s Cup continued to gather momentum across Kitui County as Mwingi region produced sub-county champions in a tournament aimed at nurturing youth talent and promoting community unity through sports.

The Mwingi North finals, held at Kyuso Stadium on February 14–15, were presided over by Deputy Governor Augustine Kanani Wambua, who attended as chief guest alongside County Executive Committee Member for Sports Phoebe Mutemi and several local leaders.

Among those present were Mumoni MCA Titus Kasinga, Ngomeni MCA Joseph Nzungi Ngwele, and host Kyuso MCA Munyoki Mwinzi, who lauded the county for investing in grassroots sports development.

In the Mwingi North finals, Sunshine Queens from Tharaka emerged women’s champions after defeating Mumoni Starlets, while Super Eagles Kyuso clinched the men’s title by overcoming Murigani Sports Club of Ngomeni. Sunshine FC (Tharaka) finished as men’s runners-up, with Ngomeni Royal Queens taking third place in the women’s category.

Meanwhile, in Mwingi Central finals played across various Nguni playgrounds, Mwingi Junior Stars were crowned men’s champions as Nguni Starlets secured the women’s title. All winning teams have now qualified for the county-level stage of the competition.

The County Ministry of Youth and Sports commended players, coaches, officials and fans for their participation, noting that the Governor’s Cup is a flagship initiative by the County Government of Kitui to empower youth, nurture talent and strengthen social cohesion through sport.

Members of the Kitui County Assembly who attended the matches pledged to push for increased sports funding to support expansion of the tournament and other youth empowerment programmes across the county.
