In a surprising political development, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has suffered a major setback following the resignation of former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Andayi Havi. Havi, who joined UDA in the run-up to the 2022 General Election, announced his formal exit from the ruling party, citing the need to pursue a different path in his public and professional life.
Havi, known for his outspoken nature and strong legal background, played a significant role in UDA’s early mobilization efforts among professionals and legal practitioners. His decision to resign is seen as a blow to the party’s efforts to retain prominent voices within its ranks, especially as internal reorganization and succession politics begin to take shape ahead of 2027.
Sources close to Havi indicate that his departure stems from growing dissatisfaction with the direction the party has taken since assuming power. He is said to have become increasingly uncomfortable with what he termed as “departures from the ideals of justice, democracy, and transparency” that initially drew him to UDA.
Political analysts suggest that Havi’s move could signal a broader wave of discontent among professionals who had hoped the UDA government would champion institutional reforms and merit-based governance. His resignation is also expected to stir political discussions across the country, given his influence and prominence in Kenya’s legal and political spheres.
As of now, Nelson Havi has not revealed his next political move, but he has promised to continue serving Kenyans through law and advocacy. His resignation marks yet another test for the ruling party’s leadership as it grapples with internal rifts and public perception challenges heading into the midterm of its first administration.
