Religion has wounded logic and reasoning

A growing public debate is emerging across parts of Africa over the role of religion in shaping social critical thinking, development, and community decision-making.

Some community voices and social commentators argue that overreliance on religious explanations for everyday challenges has slowed critical thinking and innovation in certain areas. They claim that instead of applying logic and problem-solving skills to issues such as poverty, education, and health, some communities attribute difficulties to spiritual causes, including alleged village “spiritual attacks”.

According to these critics, the trend has led to situations where scientific reasoning and practical solutions are sometimes overlooked in favour of prayer and spiritual interpretations. They say this has particularly affected youth and rural populations, where discussions around development are occasionally framed through religious or supernatural lenses rather than policy, education, or economic strategies.

However, religious leaders and faith-based organisations have defended the role of religion in African societies, noting that faith institutions have historically contributed to education, healthcare, peacebuilding, and moral guidance. They argue that religion should not be blamed for societal challenges but instead seen as a partner in development and community transformation.

Scholars say the conversation reflects a broader generational shift, with young Africans increasingly calling for a balance between faith, science, and critical thinking. Many emphasise that religion and reasoning do not have to conflict, but rather can coexist in addressing modern challenges.

As the debate continues, experts urge open dialogue, education, and community engagement to ensure that cultural and religious beliefs complement — rather than limit — innovation and intellectual growth across the continent.
