The Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke, has emphasized the critical role donkeys play in sustaining livelihoods across Kenya, particularly among smallholder farmers and vulnerable communities.

Speaking during a courtesy call by the leadership of the Association of Donkey Owners in Kenya (ADOK), Hon. Mueke noted that donkeys are central to agriculture, transport and income generation, making their welfare essential to strengthening household economies and enhancing community resilience.

The ADOK delegation, which represents more than 26,554 members drawn from 540 groups across 24 counties, engaged the Department on key challenges affecting donkeys. These included animal welfare concerns, illegal slaughter and trade, as well as limited access to veterinary services.

Hon. Mueke reaffirmed the Department of Livestock Development’s commitment to protecting donkeys and safeguarding the livelihoods that depend on them. He underscored the government’s resolve to work closely with stakeholders, including donkey owners’ associations, to address emerging threats and improve animal welfare standards.

The meeting highlighted the growing recognition of donkeys as a vital economic asset and the need for coordinated efforts to ensure their protection for the benefit of communities that rely on them.
