Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Secures Full Registration Certificate for New Political Party

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has officially received the Certificate of Full Registration for his newly formed National Economic Development Party (NEDP). The ceremony took place at the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) in Westlands, Nairobi, marking a major milestone in Sonko’s renewed political journey.
Sonko, who was accompanied by close allies and party officials, expressed confidence that NEDP would provide a fresh political alternative focused on economic transformation and youth empowerment. He noted that the party was born out of the need to address unemployment, strengthen devolved units, and champion equitable development across the country.
The Registrar of Political Parties commended the NEDP team for meeting all the legal requirements for full registration, including national representation and adherence to the Political Parties Act. The certification allows the party to operate fully, recruit members, open offices nationwide, and participate in future electoral processes.
Speaking after receiving the certificate, Sonko said NEDP would soon embark on a nationwide tour to popularize its agenda and unveil its leadership structure. He emphasized that the party’s priority would be grassroots empowerment through practical, people-centered initiatives.
The former governor now joins a growing list of political leaders establishing new parties ahead of the 2027 General Election, signaling intensified political realignments. With the NEDP officially recognized, Sonko is expected to play a more visible role in shaping national and regional political discourse in the coming months.
