Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, the Wiper party leader and opposition chief, this week convened a high-level meeting of aspirants from across the country at the party’s headquarters in Karen, signaling early preparations ahead of the 2027 General Election. The meeting brought together candidates eyeing various elective seats, with political observers interpreting it as a strategic move to strengthen the party’s grassroots presence and boost the number of elected leaders under the Wiper Democratic Movement.
However, the meeting has sparked intense political debate in Kitui County, particularly in Kitui Central, following the manner in which Stephen Kilonzo was introduced. Out of hundreds of aspirants present from the county, Kilonzo was the only one given an opportunity to address the gathering on behalf of others. The move has been widely interpreted by political analysts as a possible signal of confidence from the party leadership, with some reading it as an indirect endorsement for the parliamentary seat.
The Kitui Central parliamentary race is expected to be highly competitive, especially with the current MP Makali Mulu reportedly eyeing the gubernatorial seat in 2027 under the Wiper ticket. This has opened up the contest, attracting several aspirants seeking to succeed him. Kilonzo’s prominence at the meeting has therefore added a new dimension to the race, fueling speculation about his standing within the party ranks.
Despite the growing perception, Kilonzo has dismissed claims that he has been endorsed by Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka. Speaking exclusively, he maintained that the party will conduct a fair nomination process and that he is ready to face off with other contenders for the Wiper ticket. He emphasized his commitment to democratic competition, noting that the ultimate decision lies with party members.
Kilonzo also confirmed that he has officially joined the Wiper Democratic Movement, describing the move as a result of extensive consultations with his political allies and advisors. He expressed optimism about his political journey under the party’s leadership, pledging to champion people-centered leadership and development.
“Leadership is about listening to the people, and the people are calling for a new direction,” Kilonzo said. “I remain committed to serving with honesty, courage, and results. Together, we will build a movement that puts people first.”
