A prominent Kitui-based billionaire politician and two-term Member of Parliament has unveiled an ambitious plan to reshape the county’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election. Speaking exclusively to the TCD Digital Editor, the influential leader disclosed that he has set aside KSh 200 million to support emerging political leaders, particularly those eyeing Member of County Assembly (MCA) seats.

According to the politician, each selected MCA aspirant will receive up to KSh 10 million to fund their campaigns. He emphasized that the move is aimed at empowering a new generation of leaders while strengthening grassroots political structures across Kitui County. The funds, he noted, will be channeled through a party of his choice, with a focus on candidates who align with his political vision and development agenda.

“I will finance Members of County Assembly in 2027. With this support, I expect to have between 20 to 30 MCAs elected under my influence,” the politician stated. He further hinted that securing a significant number of MCAs would enable him to wield considerable influence in the county assembly and beyond, effectively shaping legislative decisions and governance direction.

The revelation is expected to spark political debate within Kitui, with analysts warning of the growing influence of money in local politics. However, supporters argue that such investments could boost leadership opportunities for capable but financially constrained aspirants.

Political observers note that if successfully executed, the strategy could significantly alter power dynamics within the Kitui County Assembly, potentially giving the financier a strong bargaining position in county leadership and policy direction. Some leaders have already begun positioning themselves in anticipation of the funding, signaling early political alignments.

Critics, however, have raised concerns over the implications of such large-scale financial backing, warning that it could undermine democratic processes by giving undue advantage to candidates backed by wealth rather than merit. They are calling for transparency and accountability in campaign financing to ensure a level playing field.

Despite the concerns, the announcement has energized sections of the political class in Kitui, with many young aspirants viewing it as a rare opportunity to access resources that are often a major barrier in politics. As the 2027 race gradually takes shape, all eyes will be on how this bold financial strategy influences the county’s political future.
