The re-emergence of former legislator and diplomat Kiema Kilonzo in active politics is increasingly being viewed as a major boost to the 2027 presidential ambitions of Kalonzo Musyoka.
Kiema, who previously served as Member of Parliament for Mutito and later as Kenya’s ambassador to Turkey and High Commissioner to Uganda, is widely regarded as a seasoned politician with extensive national and international networks. His return to the political arena—particularly in the Kitui East parliamentary race—has significantly reshaped the local political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During the recent United Opposition tour of Kitui County, Kiema joined a lineup of high-profile leaders including Rigathi Gachagua, Eugene Wamalwa, Justin Muturi, and Governor Julius Malombe. His presence was particularly notable during rallies in Kalundu Market and Chuluni, where he received enthusiastic receptions from crowds.
In Kalundu, Kalonzo introduced Kiema in a special segment, signaling his growing influence within the Wiper Democratic Movement. A similar reception was witnessed in Chuluni, where supporters cheered him as a preferred candidate for the Kitui East parliamentary seat.
Kiema’s national profile was further demonstrated during the opposition’s coastal tour in Mombasa. He was accorded the opportunity to address residents in Changamwe and Tononoka Grounds—platforms typically reserved for senior leaders—highlighting his stature in the opposition coalition.
Political analysts note that Kiema’s return strengthens Kalonzo’s outreach both locally and internationally. His diplomatic background and connections position him as a key link between Kalonzo and other influential leaders such as Oburu Odinga, James Orengo, Johnson Muthama, and David Musila.
Sources within political circles indicate that Kiema is actively engaging key regional figures, including Isaac Kalua and Peter Muthoka, in efforts to consolidate support for Kalonzo’s presidential bid.
His financial muscle and influence are also seen as critical assets in mobilizing grassroots and elite support, both within Ukambani and beyond.
Should Kalonzo secure the presidency in 2027, insiders suggest that Kiema could play a significant role at the national level, potentially joining the Cabinet to leverage his experience in governance and international relations.
As the 2027 political contest gradually takes shape, Kiema Kilonzo’s comeback appears to have injected new momentum into Kalonzo Musyoka’s campaign, reinforcing the opposition’s strategy to consolidate experienced leadership in its ranks.
