The County Government of Kitui has intensified efforts to empower local farmers following the disbursement of funds to grassroots groups under the On-Farm Demonstration Support Programme. The initiative targets Common Interest Groups (CIGs) and Vulnerable and Marginalized Groups (VMGs), with the aim of strengthening agricultural productivity and resilience across the county.
Speaking during the issuance of cheques in Migwani Ward, Mwingi West, and Kauwi Ward in Kitui West Sub-County, County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, reaffirmed the county’s commitment to supporting farmers through practical, hands-on approaches. He noted that the programme is designed to promote climate-smart agriculture by enabling farmers to adopt modern and sustainable farming techniques.
Dr. Kimwele emphasized that on-farm demonstrations play a critical role in equipping farmers with knowledge and skills needed to improve yields and adapt to changing climatic conditions. He added that the county government will continue to invest in agricultural extension services to ensure farmers benefit fully from such initiatives.
Farmers who received the support expressed optimism that the funding will enhance their farming activities and improve their livelihoods. They noted that access to such resources will not only boost production but also strengthen food security at the household and community levels.
The On-Farm Demonstration Support Programme forms part of the broader strategy by the Kitui County Government to revitalize the agricultural sector and uplift rural economies through targeted, inclusive interventions
