Kitui gubernatorial hopeful Makali Mulu has reiterated his commitment to transforming Kitui County into a model county, emphasizing that residents must take charge of their own destiny ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking during a public address in Mutha, the former legislator criticized the culture of handouts and corrupt politics, arguing that trading long-term development for short-term benefits has continued to slow down progress in the county.
Dr. Mulu said his experience in resource management would guide his leadership approach if elected governor. He urged residents to focus on development-oriented leadership, noting that no external forces would come to change the county’s fortunes unless the people themselves made deliberate choices.
During a debate on Radio Citizen, the economist maintained his tough stance on corruption, warning that leaders involved in corrupt dealings should not expect leniency under his administration if he becomes governor in 2027.
He also condemned what he described as injustices against traders in the county, citing incidents where businesses were allegedly demolished without proper relocation plans. Dr. Mulu pledged that affected traders would have their licences compensated once he assumes office.
The aspirant further criticized what he termed as unsustainable sand harvesting across the county, saying water resources must be prioritized over short-term sand revenues. He called on residents of Kitui County to make decisive choices in the 2027 elections, describing the poll as a defining moment for the region’s future.
