Kitui Governor Julius Malombe is hosting his Garissa counterpart Nathif Jama at Nguni Market in Mwingi Central Sub-County for a high-level security meeting aimed at addressing rising cross-county herder incursions and escalating inter-ethnic clashes in the region.

The urgent meeting comes in the wake of deadly violence that has shaken parts of Mwingi. On April 25, 2026, seven people were killed in a brutal attack at Kwa Kamari in Tseikuru Ward, Mwingi North Sub-County. In a separate incident, a young student lost his life in Nguni Ward, further heightening tensions and fear among residents.

Leaders from both counties are now seeking coordinated solutions to curb the movement of armed herders across borders, which has been linked to recurring insecurity in the area. The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening joint security operations, enhancing intelligence sharing, and promoting peaceful coexistence between communities living along the Kitui–Garissa border.

Speaking during the meeting, Governor Malombe emphasized the need for firm but collaborative action to protect lives and restore stability. His Garissa counterpart, Governor Nathif Jama, echoed the call for unity and pledged cooperation in addressing the root causes of the conflict.

Local administrators, security officials, and community leaders are also in attendance, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the need for a multi-agency approach.

Residents in the affected areas have been calling for swift government intervention to prevent further bloodshed, as tensions remain high following the recent attacks.

The outcome of the talks is expected to shape immediate and long-term strategies to restore peace and security in the volatile border region
