The inaugural Kitui Governor’s Cup sub-county finals concluded in style on February 15, 2026, at Kyuso Stadium in Mwingi North, drawing large crowds and showcasing top grassroots football talent.
The finals were presided over by Kitui County Deputy Governor Augustine Kanani Wambua, who officiated the awarding ceremony and handed trophies to the winning teams. He was joined by Phoebe Mutemi, the CECM for Culture, Gender, Youth, ICT, Sports and Social Services, alongside Water and Irrigation CECM Peter Musya Ketonya, Mumoni Ward MCA Titus Kasinga, Ngomeni Ward MCA Joseph Nzungi Ngwele, and host Kyuso Ward MCA Munyoki Mwinzi.
Addressing players and fans, the Deputy Governor lauded the teams for embracing Governor Julius Malombe’s vision of using sports as a tool to empower youth, promote unity, and combat drug abuse and other social challenges.
In the women’s final, Sunshine Queens emerged victorious after defeating a determined Mumoni Starlets side. Their strong attack and disciplined defense secured them the sub-county title and a place in the county-level competition.
The men’s final saw Super Eagles Kyuso triumph over Murigani Sports Club in a thrilling encounter that kept fans entertained throughout. Super Eagles displayed tactical discipline and resilience to clinch the championship.
In additional results, Sunshine FC finished as runners-up in the men’s category, while Ngomeni Royal Queens secured third place in the women’s competition.
The Governor’s Cup, which began at the village level, attracted 684 teams and engaged more than 12,000 youths across Kitui County. The tournament continues to provide a vital platform for nurturing grassroots talent and strengthening community cohesion through sports as winners advance to the next stage of the county-wide competition.
