The much-hyped NGENGA football tournament ended in disappointment after failing to meet the expectations of football fans, with many spectators leaving the venue early in frustration.
Fans accused the organizers of prioritizing side attractions over quality football, claiming the tournament lacked proper organization and competitive matches. The situation sparked tension at the grounds, with some local women openly expressing anger over what they described as inappropriate conduct and dressing by women allegedly brought in from Nairobi to โliven upโ the event instead of focusing on football development.
Several women said they were shocked by the turn of events, noting that for over 20 years, Mwingi West MP Hon. Charles Nguna has consistently organized football tournaments without such controversies. They praised the long-running Nguna Cup, describing it as disciplined, well-organized, and deeply rooted in community values.
According to residents, the Nguna Cup remains the most popular and colourful grassroots football tournament in the regionโs history, credited with nurturing talent and promoting unity across Eastern Kenya. They added that any aspirants attempting to rival Hon. Nguna through football tournaments must invest seriously in organization, talent development, and respect for the community if they hope to match his legacy in football development.
As debate continues, locals are calling on tournament organizers to refocus on the sport itself and uphold community standards, warning that football fans will not be easily swayed by hype without substance.
