Residents of Kitui County gathered at the grounds of Kitui County Referral Hospital to commemorate the 20th edition of World Kidney Day under the theme “Kidney Health for All.”

The event, organized by the Kitui County Government Ministry of Health and Medical Services, focused on raising awareness about kidney health and encouraging residents to undergo early screening for kidney-related illnesses.

The ceremony was led by Chief Officer for Health Mr. Kamba on behalf of Julius Malombe. The Kitui County Government has stepped in to support patients suffering from kidney-related illnesses by establishing a modern renal centre of excellence, which will significantly expand access to specialized care.

The facility, a first within the South Eastern Kenya bloc is set to ease the burden on renal patients who previously had to travel long distances in search of dialysis and other renal services.

During the event, residents received a range of free health services including kidney function informations, nutritional counselling and assessment, public health education on kidney care, and screening for diabetes and hypertension.

Health officials emphasized the importance of early detection and management of kidney disease, noting that conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes are major risk factors that can lead to kidney complications if not properly managed.

The initiative was supported by several health partners including Micro Labs Limited, City Gate Specialist Hospital, Microbiology E.A. Ltd, and Medtronic Labs.

Health authorities urged residents to take advantage of the screening services and adopt healthy lifestyles to help prevent kidney disease and promote overall wellbeing.
