Nicholas Mulila is increasingly emerging as a quiet but influential figure in Kitui County politics, with many residents beginning to view him as a potential leader capable of steering the county to the next level after 2027. Though he has not openly declared any political ambitions, his name is being mentioned more frequently in political circles and community discussions.
Mulila’s growing profile is largely attributed to his deep engagement with local communities and his consistent support for churches and social initiatives across the county. Many residents describe him as a man with an unmatched heart for service, whose philanthropic acts have earned him respect beyond political affiliations.
Unlike many traditional politicians, Nicholas Mulila comes from the private sector, a background that supporters say sets him apart. They argue that while some leaders have been loud in politics with little tangible development to show—often clinging to government-initiated projects—Mulila has built his reputation through personal initiative and acts of goodwill.
His supporters believe that his approach demonstrates that leadership can be earned through service rather than political noise. They say Mulila has shown that one does not need to hold public office to make an impact, pointing to his consistent presence in community and faith-based activities.
As Kitui County looks ahead to the post-2027 era, a major question continues to dominate public debate: who will be entrusted with the county’s leadership after Governor Dr. Julius Malombe exits office? Many residents are keen to avoid leadership mistakes that could stall or reverse development gains.
Kitui voters have experienced mixed leadership outcomes in the past. Former Governor Charity Ngilu, a seasoned and decorated politician, failed to meet public expectations, eventually losing her seat in 2022 without mounting a strong defense. This experience remains fresh in the minds of many voters.
Governor Julius Malombe, on the other hand, was elected overwhelmingly and has largely been praised for delivering development quietly. His leadership style—marked by minimal political noise and steady work—has resonated with many residents across the county.
This has fueled a growing sentiment among sections of the public that Kitui does not need a loud or career politician at the helm. Instead, many are calling for a leader who prioritizes service, integrity, and results over populist rhetoric.
Within this context, Nicholas Mulila is increasingly being compared to Governor Malombe in terms of leadership style and temperament. Supporters argue that Mulila’s biggest challenge is that he does not engage in political deception or exaggeration, traits often associated with popularity in Kenyan politics.
However, concerns remain among residents that choosing the wrong candidate in the next election could have serious consequences for the county’s future. As political alignments slowly begin to take shape, the question remains whether Nicholas Mulila will step forward and whether the people of Kitui will entrust him with leading the county into its next chapter.
