As Raila Odinga’s long and illustrious political career gradually approaches its twilight, discussions about his potential successor in Luo Nyanza have intensified. For decades, Odinga has been the undisputed kingpin of Luo politics, shaping the region’s political direction and commanding unwavering loyalty. However, with age and health increasingly taking a toll on the veteran leader, a new generation of politicians is emerging to fill the void — and among them, Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, stands out prominently.
Babu Owino has steadily built a formidable political profile marked by youthful energy, bold rhetoric, and grassroots mobilization. His vocal opposition to government policies, especially during the Finance Bill 2024 protests, resonated with millions of young Kenyans frustrated by economic hardships. His ability to connect with the youth, articulate their grievances, and challenge entrenched political systems has positioned him as one of the most influential voices in Kenya’s next political chapter.
However, ascending to Raila Odinga’s stature in Luo politics will not be an easy feat. The region’s political landscape is intricate, dominated by strong loyalties, historical alliances, and seasoned power brokers. Babu Owino will need to cultivate trust among older leaders, unify fragmented factions within ODM, and demonstrate political maturity beyond activism if he hopes to inherit Odinga’s mantle. Building a broader coalition that cuts across generational and regional lines will be key to solidifying his leadership credentials.
Political analysts observe that the transition from Raila Odinga to a younger generation will define the future of Luo and national politics. Whether Babu Owino can evolve from a fiery legislator to a statesman capable of carrying Odinga’s legacy remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that Luo Nyanza is entering a new political era — one driven by ambition, generational change, and the unrelenting quest for leadership renewal.
