Kitui East Member of Parliament Nimrod Mbai has accused Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Kiema Kilonzo of travelling to China to negotiate coal-related deals, alleging that local land has been sold to foreign investors to pave the way for mining activities in Kitui County.
Speaking during a bursary issuance ceremony in Kitui East, Mbai claimed that the alleged arrangements are part of a wider plan to introduce coal mining in the region. He further alleged that Kiema Kilonzo is being positioned to run for the Kitui East parliamentary seat to facilitate the implementation of the purported mining agenda.
The outspoken MP warned that residents would resist any attempt to push coal mining projects without public consent, insisting that local communities must be fully involved in decisions affecting their land and livelihoods. He cautioned political figures against campaigning in the constituency over what he termed as โsecret deals,โ vowing strong opposition from the electorate.
Mbaiโs remarks come amid growing debate over natural resource exploitation in Kitui, where previous coal mining proposals have faced stiff resistance from residents and environmental groups. As of now, those mentioned in the allegations have not publicly responded to the claims.
