Kitui Central’s political landscape is steadily shifting following the recent entry of Hon. Stephen Kilonzo, popularly known as Kitundumo, into the Wiper Patriotic Front.

Kilonzo, who joined the party a few months ago, has increasingly become visible within opposition politics, often appearing alongside Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka at key events and rallies. His growing proximity to the Wiper leader has sparked fresh conversations about the party’s future leadership in Kitui Central.

On Sunday, Kilonzo accompanied Kalonzo to a church service at Independent Faith Baptist Church in Tseikuru, Kitui County. During the gathering, Kalonzo introduced him warmly to the congregation, noting their shared initials — SKM — in a symbolic gesture that did not go unnoticed among political observers.

Within local political circles, there is a growing belief that Kilonzo could emerge as the preferred candidate to succeed Makali Mulu, who is widely expected to vie for the Kitui gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.

Kilonzo’s grassroots appeal is increasingly being cited as a key factor behind his rising influence. Supporters describe him as approachable and relatable, a leader who easily connects across social and economic divides. His ability to blend with ordinary wananchi has strengthened his image as a “man of the people.”

His entry into Wiper has, however, unsettled other aspirants eyeing the Kitui Central parliamentary seat. Political analysts note that his growing popularity is already reshaping early campaign dynamics, with some rivals reportedly recalibrating their strategies.

Online opinion polls and informal consultations within the constituency suggest that Kilonzo is gaining traction as a front-runner for the Wiper ticket. While the race is still in its early stages, his momentum appears to be building steadily.

Speaking after the church service, Kilonzo emphasized the importance of unity and shared values in leadership.

“It was indeed a joyful and uplifting service marked by gratitude, unity, and strong faith among the congregation. I was encouraged to see a community grounded in love and shared values. Such unity is what builds a strong and peaceful society,” he posted.

As political alignments continue to take shape ahead of 2027, all eyes will be on how Kilonzo consolidates his support within Wiper ranks — and whether his early surge translates into electoral success.
