The Kitui Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock today conducted a sub-county review meeting in Kitui East Sub-County, followed by a field visit in Chuluni Ward, in a move aimed at monitoring and strengthening extension advisory services across the region.

The exercise focused on providing technical support to field stations while reinforcing a results-based, evidence-driven culture in service delivery. It also served as an opportunity to assess the progress of ongoing programmes, projects, and extension services being implemented at the grassroots level.

Leading the exercise was Kitui Executive for Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, who was accompanied by extension officers and agricultural officers. The team engaged with field staff to evaluate performance, identify gaps, and explore practical solutions to enhance service delivery to farmers.

During the field visit, the team toured the farm of Eric Mumo, a fish farmer in Chuluni Ward who has made notable strides in aquaculture. Mumo has stocked eight fish ponds with a total capacity of 55,621 fish, predominantly focusing on catfish due to its adaptability to hardy environmental conditions.

In addition to fish production, Mumo has established hatcheries for fingerling production, where the visiting team was taken through the entire breeding and rearing process. His integrated approach to aquaculture demonstrates the growing potential of fish farming as a viable income-generating activity in the county.

Mumo currently sells his fish to nearby markets at KSh 400 per kilogram and is exploring opportunities to access external markets where he can fetch premium prices for his produce.

The visit underscored the importance of strengthening extension services to *support farmers with technical knowledge, improve productivity, and link them to better markets, in line with the Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s broader goal of transforming agriculture into a sustainable and profitable sector.*

Also present during the Sub-County meeting in Kitui East were Chief officers Gladys Kivoto (Agriculture) and Jonadhan Kyambi (Livestock
