Residents of Tumila village in Thokoa Sub Location, Kyome/Thaana Ward in Mwingi West Sub County are beginning to reap the benefits of the Tumila Earth Dam, a water project completed in October 2024 to improve water access in the area.
The dam, implemented by Caritas Kitui with support from Misereor, has successfully harvested water since its completion and is currently holding a significant amount, although it has not yet reached full capacity. Water levels continue to improve gradually depending on rainfall patterns in the catchment areas.
To enhance access to clean water, an offtake well was constructed alongside the dam and fitted with a hand pump. The well currently holds adequate water, allowing community members to draw safe and reliable water for domestic use.
Residents access the water through the hand pump installed in the offtake well, reducing the long distances previously traveled in search of water and improving daily living conditions for households in the area.
The Tumila Earth Dam is already making a positive contribution to water availability in Kyome/Thaana Ward, offering hope for improved livelihoods as water storage continues to increase with ongoing rains.
