Kenya’s radio industry is experiencing a fresh wave of competition as fast-rising Radio 47 continues to challenge long-established giants, with market leader Radio Citizen now facing growing pressure from the new entrant.

Latest audience measurement data by Ipsos shows that while Radio Citizen remains the most listened-to radio station in Kenya with about 17 per cent market share, Radio 47 has rapidly climbed to second position with approximately 9 per cent of total listening time nationwide. The impressive rise has positioned the station as the fastest-growing player in the country’s highly competitive radio landscape.

Launched in March 2023 under Cape Media Ltd, the media house behind TV47, Radio 47 has transformed from a newcomer into a serious industry disruptor in less than three years. Analysts attribute its rapid growth to aggressive talent recruitment, modern digital broadcasting and content targeting youthful and urban audiences.

Industry reports indicate that Radio 47 has overtaken several long-established stations including Radio Jambo and Kameme, signaling a shift in listener preferences and increasing appetite for fresh programming. Media experts note that the station’s strategy of poaching top presenters from rival stations and investing heavily in production quality has significantly boosted its popularity.

Despite the pressure, Radio Citizen, owned by Royal Media Services, continues to dominate the airwaves with the widest reach and longest listening time among Kenyan audiences. However, the steady rise of Radio 47 has intensified competition, forcing established stations to rethink programming and audience engagement strategies to maintain their dominance.

Observers say the competition between the two stations is healthy for the media sector, as it drives innovation, improves content quality and gives listeners a wider range of choices. With radio still commanding millions of daily listeners across both rural and urban Kenya, the battle for audience loyalty is expected to intensify further in the coming years.

As Radio 47 continues to expand its footprint and influence, the rivalry with Radio Citizen is shaping a new era in Kenya’s broadcasting industry—one defined by innovation, fresh talent and fierce but healthy competition.
