PS FOR LIVESTOCK DEVELOPMENT INSPECTS KITUI MODERN MODEL FEEDLOT PROJECT
The Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making the livestock sector commercially viable and sustainable. Speaking during an inspection visit to the ongoing construction of the Kitui Modern Model Feedlot in Kanyonyoo, Kitui Rural, the PS said the project will transform livestock production and empower farmers across the county.
Hon. Mueke noted that the feedlot will serve as a central facility for fattening animals, improving their quality, and connecting farmers to both local and export markets. “This project is designed to increase the value of our livestock and ensure that farmers earn more from their hard work,” he said, emphasizing that the initiative aligns with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
The PS further highlighted that the feedlot will provide a reliable marketing link through partnerships with offtakers, enabling the supply of high-quality Kenyan livestock to meet rising demand in domestic and international markets. He added that commercialization of livestock keeping will be key to boosting rural incomes and promoting economic growth in arid and semi-arid areas like Kitui.
During the visit, Hon. Mueke was accompanied by the Chairman of the Yatta B2 Ranch, Mr. Vundi Kimanzi, and members of the cooperative who have offered land for the project. The PS commended their contribution, terming it a great example of community-driven development and public-private collaboration.
Once operational, the Kitui Modern Model Feedlot is expected to serve as a benchmark for sustainable livestock production in the country — enhancing productivity, creating jobs, and securing better livelihoods for pastoral communities.
