ITHOOKWE AIRSTRIP TO OPEN NEW GATEWAY OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR KITUI COUNTY – PS MUEKE
The Ithookwe Airstrip is set to transform Kitui County into a gateway of opportunities, according to the Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke. Speaking during a visit to the facility, Mueke said the airstrip represents more than just a runway — it is a catalyst for economic growth, tourism, and investment.
The PS noted that plans are underway to open a new Tsavo East National Park gate in Kitui South and to enhance access to the Mwingi National Reserve, positioning Ithookwe Airstrip as a strategic entry point for tourists. With its modern terminal and upgraded infrastructure, the airstrip is expected to make Kitui a preferred destination for both local and international visitors.
Beyond tourism, Mueke emphasized that the airstrip will boost business travel, support emergency response services, and attract investors seeking new opportunities in the region. He described it as a vital piece of infrastructure that will connect Kitui to the rest of the country and stimulate socio-economic development.
The government has expressed its commitment to ensuring the airstrip becomes fully operational, promising continued collaboration between national and county governments to unlock Kitui’s full potential as a hub for trade, travel, and adventure.
