Tragedy struck once again along the Kibwezi–Kitui Road after a 62-year-old woman lost her life at a notorious black spot in Makele area, Ikanga Ward, commonly known by residents as Kwa Mataka.
The woman was knocked down by a vehicle yesterday and died on the spot, adding to a growing list of fatal accidents that have occurred at the same stretch of road over the years. The vehicle involved belongs to a Nairobi-based businessman who hails from the area and was being driven by his personal driver at the time of the incident.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke to Kamba Insights, the deceased had just alighted from a matatu together with several other residents who were attending a local event. The group was offloading items by the roadside and attempting to cross to the opposite side of the road when the accident occurred.
Witnesses say the driver hooted repeatedly as he approached, but the woman appeared unable to clearly see oncoming traffic due to the luggage she was carrying. In a moment of confusion, the driver reportedly swerved to the right to avoid hitting her, but the woman also moved in the same direction, leaving the driver with no time to prevent the collision.
The driver sustained injuries and was later transferred to Nairobi for further treatment. His condition has been reported as stable. Police have since launched investigations to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
For years, residents of Makele have raised alarm over this particular section of the Kibwezi–Kitui Road, citing numerous fatal accidents despite the road being wide, straight, and enjoying good visibility with relatively light traffic. The repeated tragedies have fueled fear and frustration among locals, with some even describing the area in spiritual terms as “majini-invested,” reflecting the deep sense of helplessness felt by the community.
Beyond the beliefs lies a pressing concern: why does this stretch of road continue to claim lives? Residents are now renewing calls for authorities to conduct a proper safety audit of the area and implement lasting solutions, including clear signage, pedestrian crossings, speed-calming measures, and public awareness.
