The Residents of Kitui County have been advised to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall expected over the next several days.
According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, rainfall exceeding 20mm within 24 hours is forecast between 4:00 PM on February 25 and 9:00 PM on March 3, 2026. The alert warns of potential flash floods, flooded roads, poor visibility, and lightning strikes across various parts of the county.
In a public advisory issued Wednesday, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Mbaya Kimwele, cautioned residents to remain vigilant, particularly those living in low-lying and downstream areas where flooding may occur even in places that do not receive heavy rainfall.
“Residents should be alert for possible flash floods, flooded roads, poor visibility, and lightning strikes. Flooding may also occur in low-lying and downstream areas even where rainfall is not heavy,” said Dr. Kimwele.
The county government has urged members of the public to avoid walking or driving through moving water, crossing flooded roads or rivers, and sheltering under trees during storms due to the risk of lightning strikes.
Motorists have also been advised to exercise extra caution due to reduced visibility and slippery roads during the rainy period.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated through official weather channels and heed safety advisories issued by relevant authorities.
County disaster response teams are reportedly on standby to respond to any emergencies that may arise during the forecast period.
