Kitui County is set for an early political contest following the entry of Nicholas Muinde Mulila into the 2027 gubernatorial race.

Mulila, a senior executive at Safaricom PLC, currently serves as the Chief Corporate Security Officer (CCSO), where he oversees critical functions including business risk management, cybersecurity, revenue assurance, ethics and compliance, and physical security. He brings to the race a strong corporate background, holding an MBA in Strategy and a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) from the University of Nairobi, alongside professional credentials as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

A native of Kitui West, Mulila now joins a growing list of aspirants seeking to succeed the current county leadership. He has positioned himself as a “solutions-driven” candidate, promising prudent use of public resources, efficiency in service delivery, and a leadership style grounded in humility.

His entry into politics is backed by a track record of community development initiatives across Kitui County, many of which have been implemented through partnerships with the M-PESA Foundation.

In the health sector, Mulila has facilitated the equipping of Kauwi Sub-County Hospital with modern medical infrastructure worth KSh 14.4 million, including a theatre, anesthesia machine, and physiotherapy equipment. Similar interventions valued at over KSh 15 million have also been extended to Mutomo Mission Hospital and Yatta Level III Hospital, significantly boosting maternal healthcare services in the region.

In education, he has played a key role in co-funding the construction of a modern 800-bed hostel at St. Charles Lwanga Secondary School, a KSh 53 million project aimed at improving student accommodation. Mulila also serves as the institution’s Board of Management chairman. Additionally, he has supported youth development by sponsoring training programs for over 500 ball games coaches across the county.

Political observers note that Mulila’s blend of corporate leadership and grassroots engagement could shape the dynamics of the 2027 race, as voters increasingly weigh development track records alongside political experience.

With campaigns still in their early stages, his declaration adds momentum to what is expected to be a competitive gubernatorial contest in Kitui County.
