Kitui West Constituency took a major step toward safer nights and stronger local business on Tuesday as streetlights and the _Mulika Mwizi_ initiative were officially launched in Manze Itumo, Kithuiani, Mikuyumikya, and Kwa Kitisya.
The rollout was led by Mr. Kimanga, who is vying for the Kitui West parliamentary seat, in a drive aimed at improving security and extending trading hours for small-scale traders.
*Lighting the Economy, Securing the People*
The initiative directly aligns with Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe’s manifesto pledge to ensure every market center across the county is lit and secure. With new high-mast and streetlights now installed, traders at the four centers can operate past sunset without fear, while boda boda operators and residents move more safely.
“Darkness has been a barrier to business and a cover for crime,” Kimanga said while addressing residents at Kwa Kitisya. “_Mulika Mwizi_ means we are lighting up every corner so our mothers can sell safely, our youth can work late shifts, and thieves have nowhere to hide. This is about dignity and the 24-hour economy.”
*Residents Welcome the Initiative*
At Manze Itumo, mama mboga vendors broke into song as the lights were switched on, noting that evening sales of vegetables and groceries had long been cut short by insecurity. In Kithuiani and Mikuyumikya, shopkeepers said the lights would reduce break-ins and allow kiosks to close later, boosting daily income.
*Linking to County Vision*
Governor Malombe’s administration has prioritized market lighting as a quick-win for economic stimulation, arguing that secure, lit centers attract more customers, reduce crime, and encourage youth to run night-time businesses. Kimanga’s launch in Kitui West plugs directly into that county agenda.
“As I seek the mandate of Kitui West in 2027, my promise is simple: practical projects that touch mwananchi daily,” Kimanga added. “Water, roads, and security. We start with light because light brings life to the economy.”
The _Mulika Mwizi_ rollout is expected to extend to more centers across Kitui West in the coming months.
