The County Assembly of Kitui has emerged as the overall best-performing institution in the category of County Executives and County Assemblies at the 2025 Financial Reporting (FiRe) Awards, earning national acclaim for exemplary financial accountability and transparency.

Under the leadership of Speaker Hon. Kevin Kinengo Katisya, the Assembly was feted by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) during an awards ceremony held at the CPA Centre in Nairobi. The FiRe Awards recognize excellence in financial reporting, compliance with international accounting standards, transparency, and prudent management of public resources across both public and private sector institutions.

Speaker Kinengo received the prestigious award accompanied by the House leadership, including Majority Leader Hon. Harrison Maluki (Migwani Ward), members of the Public Investments and Accounts Committee led by Minority Whip Hon. Gabriel Munyao (Kauwi Ward), the Audit Committee chaired by Hon. Michael Muthui Kimwele, and members of the County Assembly Service Board.

The delegation was hosted by ICPAK Chairperson CPA Prof. Elizabeth Kalunda Muvui and Chief Executive Officer CPA Dr. Grace Kamau, who lauded the County Assembly of Kitui for attaining an unqualified audit opinion—the highest audit rating possible. The opinion signifies that the Assembly’s financial statements were fairly presented, accurate, and fully compliant with applicable accounting standards.

ICPAK commended the Assembly for the prudent and responsible use of public funds, noting that the achievement reflects strong leadership, effective oversight, and a firm commitment to good governance.

“This award is a testament to our unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and excellence in financial stewardship,” said Speaker Kinengo. “It belongs to every Member of the County Assembly, our dedicated staff led by the Acting Clerk, the Audit Committee, and most importantly, the people of Kitui County whom we serve.”

The Speaker further thanked ICPAK and the FiRe Awards organizers for the recognition, saying it underscores the importance of best practices in public financial management and motivates institutions to continually improve.

“To the people of Kitui County, this honour reaffirms our dedication to responsible resource management, open and accountable processes, and the delivery of development through good governance. We remain committed to strengthening oversight, enhancing public participation, and upholding the highest standards of service for the benefit of our citizens,” he added.

The win places the Kitui County Assembly at the forefront of public sector accountability in Kenya, setting a benchmark for county legislatures nationwide.
