The project, a joint initiative between the national and county governments, is expected to boost local trade, create jobs and enhance economic activity in the Tulia area and its surroundings.
The site was handed over on Thursday by the County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Fredrick Kimanga in the company of Chief Officer Evan Mutemi
, to the national government contractor. The county government provided public land for the project, while the national government will finance and oversee construction.
Speaking during the ceremony at Tulia Market, Kimanga said the project demonstrates strong collaboration between the two levels of government in delivering development to residents. He noted that the modern market will include trading stalls, an ablution block and a water borehole to improve sanitation, accessibility and convenience for traders.
Kimanga said the project aligns with Governor Dr. Julius Malombeโs development agenda focused on urbanization and economic empowerment across the county. Construction is expected to begin next week.
The handover followed a stakeholder engagement meeting bringing together traders, Mutonguni Ward MCA Benjamin Mulandi, market committee members, local administrators and county officials to prepare for the commencement of works.
Kimanga emphasized that sustained engagement between the Kitui County Government and the State Department for Housing and Urban Development had ensured smooth planning and coordination leading to the projectโs rollout.

Eastern Region Director from the State Department of Housing and Urban Development, Patrick Mwangi, assured traders and leaders that the contractor had been duly procured and construction would commence immediately in line with agreed standards and timelines.
During the event, eight solar-powered security lights were also launched at Tulia Market to improve security, support extended trading hours and enhance the business environment ahead of construction.
Local traders and leaders welcomed the development, describing the modern market as a long-awaited project that will transform business in Mutonguni Ward and strengthen the local economy.
