The Kamba community living in Makueni County has expressed great joy and gratitude following the official commencement of the long-awaited construction of the Emali–Ukia Road. The project, which officially kicked off this morning, marks a major milestone in improving infrastructure and connectivity within the region.
Residents say the road, once complete, will open up Makueni’s rural areas to trade, tourism, and investment, creating new opportunities for farmers, traders, and transport operators. For years, locals have endured poor road conditions that made travel and transportation of goods difficult, especially during the rainy seasons.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, leaders and community representatives hailed President William Ruto for honoring his promise to the people of Makueni. They noted that the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to equitable development and to ensuring that all regions of Kenya benefit from national growth initiatives.
The Emali–Ukia Road is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway and interior parts of Makueni, while also linking local markets and schools to major transport corridors. Contractors have already mobilized equipment and manpower, signaling the government’s seriousness in implementing the project on schedule.
Residents have pledged their full support and cooperation to the contractors and government agencies overseeing the project. Many expressed optimism that once completed, the road will transform livelihoods, boost trade, and cement the region’s role as a key agricultural and commercial hub in the lower eastern region.
