Mwingi West Member of Parliament, Hon. Charles Nguna, has rolled out the distribution of subsidized gas cylinders to low- and middle-income households under the government’s Gas Yetu initiative. The exercise, which took place in Kyusyani and Winzyei locations, aims to promote clean energy use and reduce reliance on firewood and charcoal.
Through the initiative, the government is providing a complete 6kg cooking kit—comprising a gas cylinder, burner, and grill—at a subsidized cost of Ksh 1,500. The programme targets to distribute 3,000 such kits to households across Mwingi West Constituency. Residents turned up in large numbers to benefit from the affordable clean cooking solution.
Hon. Nguna emphasized that the Gas Yetu programme is part of the government’s broader plan to promote environmental conservation and ease the burden of traditional cooking methods on families. “This initiative will not only save our forests but also improve the health and comfort of our people, especially women, by reducing indoor air pollution,” he said.
The MP further assured residents that more gas kits are on the way to meet the overwhelming demand witnessed during the initial phase of distribution. He urged beneficiaries to make good use of the cylinders and encourage their neighbors to embrace clean energy.
The Gas Yetu programme is expected to significantly curb deforestation, promote environmental sustainability, and enhance efficiency in kitchen activities. The initiative aligns with Kenya’s green energy agenda and the government’s commitment to ensuring affordable, safe, and clean energy access for all households.
