Residents in parts of Tharaka and Mbeere have raised concern over reports that some single mothers are visiting suspected witchcraft dens in remote interior trading centres seeking charms believed to help them attract wealthy men.
According to local informers, the women allegedly consult traditional practitioners who promise them spiritual assistance and “love charms” aimed at capturing the attention of financially stable men who frequently travel or live away from their families.
Community elders say the trend has quietly grown in recent months, with some shrines reportedly operating deep in rural areas where visitors seek spiritual interventions related to relationships, finances, and personal fortunes.
Local leaders and clergy have expressed concern about the practice, warning residents against relying on superstition and urging communities to focus on lawful and constructive ways of improving their livelihoods.
Some residents have also called on authorities to investigate the alleged activities, saying such practices could exploit vulnerable people seeking quick solutions to financial challenges.
Despite the claims circulating in the region, no official report has yet been issued by authorities regarding the existence or operations of the alleged witchcraft dens.
