On Thursday 5th March 2026 -Kitui County Executive for Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele officially handed over the Ksh 10 million Mwangeni Livestock Sale Yard in Athi Ward, Kitui South Sub-County, in a move aimed at strengthening livestock marketing and improving incomes for farmers in the area.

The livestock sale yard is a joint initiative funded by the Small Scale Irrigation and Value Addition Project (SIVAP) with support from the African Development Bank, in collaboration with the County Government of Kitui. The project is part of ongoing efforts to improve livestock infrastructure and enhance value chains within the county.

Speaking during the handover, Dr. Kimwele noted that the modern livestock sale yard will provide a structured and reliable marketplace for farmers, traders, and livestock buyers, while promoting better livestock marketing systems in the region.

He said the facility will serve as a key trading hub for large livestock such as cattle, small stock including goats and sheep, as well as poultry, enabling farmers to access competitive markets and fair prices for their animals.

Dr. Kimwele further urged members of the community to take ownership of the facility and safeguard it from vandalism, emphasizing that such projects are meant to directly benefit local farmers and stimulate economic growth.

The sale yard is expected to significantly reduce the challenges farmers previously faced when selling their livestock, including long distances to markets, poor pricing structures, and lack of organized trading spaces.

Also present during the event were County Executive for Sports Phoebe Mutemi, Chief Officer for Livestock Jonathan Kyambi, SIVAP Project Manager Eng. Amos Kiptanui, local chiefs, members of the community, and officers from the County Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock, Trade, and Finance.
