The County Government of Kitui County has stepped up preparations for the rollout of a major climate resilience and food security programme targeting vulnerable communities across the region.

The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture and Livestock, Dr. Stephen Mbaya Kimwele, today hosted a delegation from the World Food Programme (WFP) during a consultative meeting to kick-start implementation plans for the new initiative.

The meeting formally introduced a project funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) titled โ€œBuilding Climate Resilience for Food Security in Fragile Settings of the Horn of Africa.โ€ The programme will run from February 2026 to November 2027 and will be implemented across five counties: Kitui, Makueni, Garissa, Wajir, and Baringo.

Key pillars of the project

The initiative will focus on three strategic areas aimed at strengthening resilience among farmers and pastoralists:

Anticipatory climate action through dissemination of downscaled climate information to guide farming and livestock decisions.

Insurance and financial inclusion, including promotion of crop and livestock insurance, formation of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), financial literacy training, social and behaviour change communication, and linkage to insurance services.

Soil and water conservation alongside promotion of climate-resilient value chains, post-harvest management, value addition, aggregation, and improved market access.

The consultative meeting brought together county leadership, technical officers, and representatives from the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) and WFP. NDMA officials presented the current food security situation to inform planning and guide strategic implementation of the programme.

Among those present were Chief Officer for Agriculture and Fisheries Gladys Kivoto, Chief Officer for Livestock and Apiculture Jonathan Kyambi, WFP Team Leader Caroline Muchai, County NDMA Director Eunice Mutuku, and other senior officials from both the county and partner organisations.

The project is expected to enhance climate resilience, boost agricultural productivity, and improve food security for communities vulnerable to climate shocks across the participating counties.
