The Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Hon. Jonathan Mueke, has led a government initiative to boost commercial honey production and strengthen drought resilience in Turkana County.
During a development tour in the region, PS Mueke delivered over 100 modern beehives to farmer groups drawn from Loima and Turkana Central constituencies. The initiative aims to support local farmers to scale up commercial honey production and diversify livelihoods in the arid county.
Speaking during the event, Mueke highlighted the national governmentโs strategic drought response measures, revealing that KSh 500 million has been released to support the supply of animal feeds across affected regions. He further disclosed that the State Department for Livestock has submitted a KSh 5.8 billion budget proposal to enhance water tracking systems, veterinary medicines, vaccines and other critical animal health interventions.
The PS emphasized that livestock covered under the ongoing Mass Vaccination Program are fully protected against disease outbreaks, a move he said will safeguard farmersโ access to both local and export markets.
โOur focus remains on protecting livelihoods and strengthening resilience among pastoralist communities, especially in drought-prone areas,โ Mueke said.
He noted that the beekeeping project will provide an alternative income stream for Turkana residents while supporting food security and economic stability.
The PS was hosted by Turkana County Deputy Governor Hon. Dr John Erus and Loima MP Hon. Protus Akuja, alongside other county and national government leaders who attended the event.
