Kitui politics is already heating up ahead of the 2027 general election, with insiders alleging that former Governor Charity Ngilu is uneasy about a possible gubernatorial showdown with Kitui Central MP Dr Makali Mulu. According to political observers within the county, Dr Mulu’s growing influence and solid grassroots support have placed him among the strongest contenders for the county’s top seat, a factor said to be causing discomfort within Ngilu’s camp.
Unverified sources further claim that Ngilu, who is associated with the Narc party, is keen on influencing the Wiper Party’s nomination process to determine who will fly the party’s flag in the 2027 Kitui gubernatorial contest. Insiders allege that she would be more comfortable facing leaders such as Kitui South MP Hon Irene Kasalu or Kitui East MP Hon Enoch Wambua, rather than Dr Makali Mulu, whom they describe as a formidable and well-organized opponent.
The same sources allege that some of Ngilu’s close supporters have been mobilized to politically ridicule and demean Dr Makali Mulu in a bid to intimidate him and discourage his entry into the race. These claims, however, remain unconfirmed, and no official statement has been issued by Ngilu or her team regarding the allegations.
On his part, Dr Makali Mulu has struck a confident tone, urging his supporters to remain steadfast and focused. He dismissed intimidation claims and insisted that the people of Kitui will have the final say, boldly declaring that he is ready to face Ngilu at the ballot and “send her home in the morning,” a remark that has further energized his supporters as the 2027 contest slowly comes into focus.
As alliances shift and political temperatures rise, Kitui residents are watching closely, with many expecting the gubernatorial race to be one of the most competitive and closely fought in the county’s history.
