Kitui politics is beginning to take shape ahead of the 2027 General Election, with emerging reports indicating that influential power brokers from Kyangwithya West Ward are grooming Kitui County Assembly Deputy Speaker Hon. Christopher “Lion” Nzilu to contest the Kitui Central parliamentary seat.
The developments come amid growing expectations that the current Kitui Central MP, Dr. Makali Mulu, will shift focus to the Kitui gubernatorial race in 2027, a move that would leave the parliamentary seat vacant and open to intense competition.
Kyangwithya West, often referred to by insiders as the ward of “power,” has historically produced some of Kitui’s most influential leaders. It is the political home of Governor Dr. Julius Makau Malombe, former Governor Hon. Charity Ngilu, and former Cabinet Minister Hon. George Ndoto, among other senior figures who have shaped county and national politics over the years.
Sources indicate that a well-organized political network from the ward is quietly working behind the scenes to ensure that Kyangwithya West maintains its long-standing dominance in Kitui Central leadership. Insiders claim that Hon. Nzilu’s rising profile, grassroots appeal, and strategic position as Deputy Speaker of the County Assembly have made him a preferred choice among local political elites.
Supporters argue that Nzilu has demonstrated political maturity, loyalty, and the ability to navigate complex power structures—qualities they believe are necessary to keep the constituency’s leadership within Kyangwithya West’s sphere of influence.
However, political observers caution that the race is still wide open. Kitui Central remains a highly competitive constituency, and other aspirants from different wards are expected to declare interest once the 2027 political temperature rises.
For now, the question remains: Is MCA Christopher Nzilu the political heir from Kyangwithya West poised to take over the Kitui Central parliamentary seat? As alliances form and ambitions crystallize, only time will tell.
