Safaricom’s Chief Corporate Security Officer, Nicholas Mulila, joined officials from the Safaricom M-Pesa Foundation to preside over the grand opening and handover of a state-of-the-art ultra-modern dormitory at St. Charles Lwanga School. The colourful ceremony marked a major milestone for the institution and the wider community.
The new dormitory, constructed at a cost of KSh 25.6 million, is designed to directly address long-standing accommodation challenges that have affected learning and student welfare at the school. The expansive facility stands as a testament to Safaricom’s continued commitment to supporting education through transformative infrastructure projects.
During the event, Mr. Mulila—who also serves as the Board of Management Chair—encouraged students to make the most of the improved environment by focusing on academic excellence. He reminded them that the world is full of opportunities for disciplined and hardworking young people, urging them to remain committed to their studies and personal growth.
Significantly, the project stands out as the single largest investment by the Safaricom M-Pesa Foundation in any school-based initiative to date. It not only received the lion’s share of foundation funding but also sets a new benchmark for educational infrastructure development under the foundation’s philanthropic portfolio.
With a capacity to accommodate over 700 students, the new dormitory now holds the title of the largest ever constructed in any school across Kitui County. The facility is expected to drastically ease congestion, enhance student comfort, and create a conducive living and learning environment—ushering in a new era of promise and potential for St. Charles Lwanga School.
