Kitui County is set for a major boost in its water and sanitation sector after emerging as the top beneficiary of the Kenya Water, Hygiene and Sanitation (K-WASH) Program for the 2025/2026 financial year. The allocation, which will be released by the National Treasury in the coming months, places Kitui ahead of 18 other participating counties in the race toward achieving universal water access.
The revelation was made by Ms. Eden Mati, a representative from the World Bank, during a high-level engagement forum attended by officials from the K-WASH Program Management Unit, the World Bank, and senior officers from the county departments of Water, Public Health, and Finance. Also present were representatives from Kitui’s two county water companies, underscoring the importance of collaboration in rolling out water infrastructure projects.
Ms. Mati commended Governor Julius Malombe’s administration for demonstrating exceptional performance in meeting the program’s disbursement-linked indicators. She noted that Kitui County recorded the highest level of compliance among all beneficiary counties, a key factor in unlocking the largest funding allocation under the program.
The K-WASH initiative, valued at Ksh. 59 billion and running over five years, is designed to help counties expand access to clean water, improve sanitation infrastructure, and promote hygiene practices. The program aligns with Kenya’s broader commitment to achieving universal water and sanitation coverage by 2030, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 6.
With Kitui securing the lion’s share of the funding, the county government is expected to accelerate ongoing water projects, expand piped water networks, rehabilitate boreholes, and strengthen community-level sanitation initiatives. The support is projected to improve water security, reduce disease burden, and transform livelihoods across the county’s rural and urban areas.
