The County Government of Kitui has taken a significant step toward improving healthcare services by integrating HIV and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) care. Through the Ministry of Health and Sanitation, the county has officially received HIV and NCD study materials aimed at strengthening the management of patients living with diabetes, hypertension, and HIV.
The handover ceremony was held at the County Health Management Team grounds and brought together key health partners, including the Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK), NASCOP, the University of Nairobi, and the NCD Division under the Ministry of Health. The collaboration marks a milestone in advancing integrated, patient-centered healthcare in Kitui County.
The initiative is part of a national evaluation project titled “Integration of HIV Services into Non-HIV Platforms Using NCDs.” The program seeks to strengthen healthcare delivery by combining HIV and NCD services, ensuring that patients can access comprehensive medical attention under one roof. This integration will enhance screening, follow-up, and treatment outcomes for patients while improving efficiency within the health system.
Eight health centers in Kitui County will serve as intervention sites for the project — Kyuso, Ngomeni, Nzawa, Mutomo, Miambani, Nzatani, and Kakeani — while eight others including Tiva, Mulango, Kanziku, Katyethoka, Ikutha, Nuu, Voo, and Mathuki will act as control sites. The distributed study materials will support research, coordination of care, and improved monitoring and reporting across all these facilities.
To support the implementation, the county has rolled out the Imara Care System, a digital platform designed to enhance patient record management and data-driven decision-making. The health department has also invested in nine desktop computers, nineteen tablets, and internet routers to strengthen reporting and communication between health facilities.
Through this project, Kitui County continues to demonstrate its commitment to accessible, efficient, and holistic healthcare delivery. The partnership between CHAK, the University of Nairobi, NASCOP, and the NCD Division reflects a strong national drive toward integrated health services that improve the lives of patients and strengthen Kenya’s healthcare system.
