More than 300 households in Ngomeni Ward, Mwingi North Sub-County, are set to enjoy improved access to clean water following the commissioning of the River Thunguthu–Mwangeni Sumpwell Water Supply Scheme by Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe. The project marks another milestone in the county’s ongoing efforts to enhance water availability and address perennial shortages in arid and semi-arid parts of Kitui.

The newly commissioned project, located in Kalwa/Kavuti area, is designed to produce approximately 50 cubic meters (50,000 litres) of water per day. This capacity is expected to sufficiently meet the daily water needs of residents, livestock, and small-scale agricultural activities within the area, significantly easing the burden of long treks in search of water.

Key components of the project include a sumpwell equipped with a submersible pump and motor, a solar-powered pumping system, a guard house, a 4.1-kilometre rising mainline from Thunguthu River to Mwangeni, a 10,000-litre water kiosk, and a cattle trough. These features ensure that the water project is both sustainable and environmentally friendly, relying primarily on solar energy to reduce operational costs.

Speaking during the commissioning, Governor Malombe reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing reliable and accessible water solutions across Kitui County. He noted that his government continues to prioritize water infrastructure development as part of his broader agenda to uplift livelihoods and promote health, sanitation, and economic empowerment in rural communities.

The County Department of Water reported that the scheme will be managed by the Kyuso–Mwingi Water and Sanitation Company (KIMWASCO) to ensure proper maintenance and accountability. Plans are also underway to install elevated tanks at Mwangeni and extend a return pipeline through Kakunguu to Kalwa Shopping Centre to further expand water coverage and pressure efficiency.

Residents of Ngomeni Ward expressed gratitude to the county government for the project, noting that it would greatly improve their quality of life. They lauded Governor Malombe’s continued investment in water and other essential infrastructure, which they said is transforming the once water-scarce region into a thriving and hopeful community.
