Hon. Dr. Makali Mulu, the outspoken Member of Parliament for Kitui Central, has stirred national debate after declaring that Kenya’s Parliament is under state capture. Speaking candidly during an interview on Musyi FM’s morning talk show on Tuesday, the veteran legislator lamented that the current House no longer represents the will of the people but instead serves the interests of powerful individuals within government.

Dr. Mulu expressed deep frustration over what he termed as a compromised institution incapable of safeguarding the rights and welfare of ordinary Kenyans. “The current parliament cannot help Kenyans,” he stated firmly. “It’s time for us to look to the courts to challenge the draconian laws being passed by this legislature.” His remarks were met with mixed reactions, with supporters praising his courage while critics accused him of undermining the institution he serves.

The Kitui Central MP, known for his firm stand on governance and transparency, insisted that parliament has lost its independence and is being manipulated by the executive. According to Mulu, critical bills that should protect citizens are being rushed through without adequate debate, while dissenting voices within parliament are being silenced through intimidation and political coercion.

His comments have reignited discussions on the separation of powers and the health of Kenya’s democracy. Civil society groups and a section of opposition leaders have echoed Mulu’s concerns, warning that the erosion of parliamentary autonomy poses a serious threat to constitutional governance and accountability.

As the debate continues, many Kenyans are now calling for urgent reforms to restore public confidence in parliament. Dr. Mulu’s statement, though controversial, has once again brought to light the growing perception that Kenya’s key institutions are slowly losing their independence — a matter that could shape the political discourse ahead of the 2027 general elections.
