Kanyonyo Weighbridge Boosts Road Safety and Compliance in Kitui

The Kanyonyo Weighbridge in Kitui County has become a vital checkpoint in curbing the menace of overloaded trucks ferrying sand and other construction materials across the region. Since its commissioning in February this year, the facility has played a major role in promoting discipline and compliance among transporters using the Mwingi, Garissa, and Kitui routes.

According to officials from the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the weighbridge was established to address the rising cases of overloaded lorries that have been damaging key road networks and posing safety risks to other road users. The strategic location of Kanyonyo, at the intersection of major trade routes, has made it a crucial monitoring point for traffic heading to and from Kitui and neighbouring counties.

Through continuous vehicle weighing, wide-load inspections, and random mobile enforcement checks, the weighbridge has ensured that transporters comply with the stipulated axle load limits. The use of advanced traffic sensors and digital recording systems has also enhanced efficiency in detecting violations, minimizing the chances of human interference or manipulation.

Local residents and transport stakeholders have lauded the initiative, noting that it has not only helped reduce the frequency of road accidents but also protected the newly constructed and rehabilitated roads in the county. Many truck operators are now opting for proper loading practices to avoid penalties and delays, leading to smoother traffic flow and reduced wear and tear on vehicles.

County officials have further highlighted that the facility’s operations are aligned with national efforts to modernize transport infrastructure and improve logistics safety. The weighbridge serves as part of a broader plan to integrate smart monitoring systems across key transport corridors in Eastern Kenya, ensuring compliance and accountability in the transport sector.

With sustained enforcement and cooperation from transporters, the Kanyonyo Weighbridge is expected to continue playing a pivotal role in safeguarding road infrastructure, enhancing safety, and promoting responsible business practices in Kitui County and beyond
