Nyeri Governor H.E. Dr. Mwalimu Mutahi Kahiga has issued a public apology following backlash over remarks he made in a vernacular clip that circulated widely on social media regarding the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Kahiga expressed deep regret and extended a heartfelt apology to the mourning nation, the Odinga family, the ODM fraternity, the Luo community, and all Kenyans who were offended by his comments. He clarified that his remarks were not meant to be celebratory but were taken out of context.

“The clip was taken while attending a burial in my home village. My remarks were in no way celebratory. What I meant is that under the current broad-based government, the loss of the Rt. Hon. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga sends everyone back to the drawing board,” Kahiga explained.

The governor further stated that his words represented his personal views and should not be associated with any political affiliation or the Council of Governors. Acknowledging the public outrage his remarks generated, he announced his resignation as the Vice Chair of the Council of Governors.

“Finally, in noting the huge public interest that this issue has generated, I am taking responsibility of the real and perceived meaning of my remarks and as a result, I have decided that with immediate effect to step down as the Vice Chair of the Council of Governors,” Kahiga said.
