Notable Absence of Kalonzo and Ngilu at Mashujaa Day Celebrations in Kitui Raises Eyebrows
One of the most striking absences during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County was that of former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu. The two political heavyweights, both hailing from the host county, were missing from the high-profile national event presided over by President William Ruto.
Their nonattendance has sparked widespread speculation among political observers and residents, given their long-standing influence in the region’s political landscape. Kalonzo, the Wiper Party leader and a key figure in national politics, has often been a central presence in major national occasions, while Ngilu, known for her vocal leadership and grassroots following, has been equally prominent in Kitui affairs.
What made Ngilu’s absence even more conspicuous is her close proximity to the venue — her home literally shares a fence with Ithookwe Stadium. Yet, despite the fanfare, parades, and national pride on full display, the former governor opted to stay away from the festivities, a move that did not go unnoticed by residents and commentators alike.
The Mashujaa Day event, which brought together top national leaders, dignitaries, and thousands of citizens, was seen as an opportunity to showcase Kitui’s growth and unity. However, the conspicuous absence of the county’s two most recognizable political figures has fueled talk of lingering political rifts and subtle protest gestures within the region’s leadership.
