Kauwi Sub-County Hospital in Kitui West has received a major boost after the MPESA Foundation donated medical equipment worth KSh 14.4million to enhance healthcare service delivery in the region. The handover ceremony, held on Thursday 14th November 2025, comes at a time when the County Government of Kitui is intensifying efforts to strengthen Universal Health Coverage (UHC) across all sub-counties.
Speaking during the event, County health officials emphasized that the donation aligns with Article 43 of the Constitution, which guarantees every Kenyan the right to the highest attainable standard of health. They noted that the equipment will greatly improve the hospital’s capacity to offer quality, accessible, and affordable medical services to thousands of residents.

The equipment, which will support departments such as maternal and child health, outpatient and inpatient care, laboratory services, and emergency response, is expected to significantly reduce referrals to the Kitui County Referral Hospital. By upgrading Kauwi Sub-County Hospital, residents of Kitui West will now receive comprehensive healthcare closer to their homes.

The handover ceremony was officiated by Nicholas Mulila of the Safaricom Foundation, accompanied by senior officers from the Safaricom MPESA Foundation. The officials reaffirmed the foundation’s commitment to working with counties across the country to strengthen health systems and uplift communities through impactful partnerships.
County leadership expressed deep gratitude to the MPESA Foundation, describing the donation as a timely intervention that demonstrates the power of public–private partnerships in transforming lives. They noted that such collaborations are crucial in ensuring sustained progress toward Universal Health Coverage and in supporting the implementation of the Social Health Insurance Act of 2023.

The County Government also reassured residents that the new equipment will be safeguarded and efficiently utilized. They confirmed that qualified health personnel have already been deployed and that systems are being put in place to ensure continuous and reliable service delivery at the facility.
Residents of Kitui West were urged to take collective responsibility in supporting the hospital’s operations and preserving its assets. County officials concluded by thanking the MPESA Foundation for its generosity and reiterated their commitment to delivering a healthier and more resilient Kitui County
