Kitui East is abuzz with fresh political speculation following a high-attendance community forum hosted by Sammy Mutea at his rural home in Zombe-Kasunguni over the weekend.
Just a few months ago, Mutea was at the forefront of uniting Kitui East youth through football tournaments — initiatives that drew hundreds of young people and positioned him as a mobilizer of grassroots talent. Around the same period, he was reportedly traveling across borders for advanced security training focused on combating public theft, further widening his profile beyond local activism.
On Saturday, the youthful mobilizer hosted residents from two villages in a “come together” forum that attracted over 1,000 attendees, according to organizers. The gathering brought together youth, women leaders, spiritual leaders led by Bishop Peter Mwangangi, Bishop Mburia of Maxmum Miracle Centre, Rev. Malii of Breath Of Life Church , Rev. Kithung’a of AIC Zombe Parish, Hon. Mwathi Katheke – former Sombe/Mwitika MCA, Mr. Tony Mwalimu- Univison Sacco Director, Mr. Mbondo – Kitui County KUPPET JSS Secretary, Mr. Mwanzia – Former Kitui County KEPSHA Chairman, Mr. Makwele – National Deputy Chairman Aombe Clan among other dignitaries and local opinion shapers.
The meeting culminated in an endorsement of Kitui Woman Representative Irene Kasalu for the Kitui gubernatorial seat in 2027 — a move likely to reshape early political alignments in the constituency.
From humble beginnings to commanding attention across villages in Kitui East, Mutea’s growing influence has sparked debate. Some local observers argue that political penetration in Kitui East increasingly requires his goodwill, while others interpret his activities as strategic groundwork for a larger political ambition.
